I know its down to personal preference, but as a rule the Cardinal Tetra always seems to be mentioned (If in a nice shoal shown against a black background for example)

What do people think?

Are you asking what kinds of things makes a fish look good in a tank like backgrounds or what color or type of substrate?

Well if you are then I think that angels look good with a natural colored gravel because the gold ones can almost blend in with the gravel in a big tank like a 55g when the tank light is off or on when they are small.

To be honest it was just a general open question. You seem to see the old cardinal in most mag's when people are talking about tropical fish & even on this website against various topics..

Anybody got any good pic's of a large shoal of cardinals?

Ok I'm sorry I must have misunderstood the question. No need to get upset about it. ;)

I can't decide between a few so:

Small fish: bettas.

Medium: congo tetras, angelfish.

Large: severums, oscars.[

All the pictures I've seen of the peacock goby (tateurndina occellicauda) suggests an abnormally good-looking fish. The only specimen I've ever seen in real life (last week, in the lfs slated in another thread) was a pathetic-looking sight; you could hardly tell it was meant to have colours at all. But just wait till I get my own group up and running!

Otherwise, I've always thought the pearl gourami particularly handsome. David Alderton has a photo in The Aquarium Owner's Handbook of a group of gouramis (?young males) against a white substrate and a heavily planted background.

Afraid I find neons a bit boring. And the brightly coloured African cichlids don't seem to do anything for me at all; maybe because they so often feature in the company-run store tanks; I seem to associate them with the soap counter at John Lewis more than the natural world. Not fish so much as some sort of bubble bath accessory.
