All the pictures I've seen of the peacock goby (tateurndina occellicauda) suggests an abnormally good-looking fish. The only specimen I've ever seen in real life (last week, in the lfs slated in another thread) was a pathetic-looking sight; you could hardly tell it was meant to have colours at all. But just wait till I get my own group up and running!
Otherwise, I've always thought the pearl gourami particularly handsome. David Alderton has a photo in The Aquarium Owner's Handbook of a group of gouramis (?young males) against a white substrate and a heavily planted background.
Afraid I find neons a bit boring. And the brightly coloured African cichlids don't seem to do anything for me at all; maybe because they so often feature in the company-run store tanks; I seem to associate them with the soap counter at John Lewis more than the natural world. Not fish so much as some sort of bubble bath accessory.
