I have no live plants in my tank but i want a really good light system, i live in Canada, and i was wondering if anyone knew a good light(s) i could get i have a 36 gallon tank and i want the water looking clear blue how do i get that kind of affect!! thanks

There are many good lights on the market. Because you have no live plants I'd only bother with one decent quality T8 flourescent tube which spans your aquarium suitably. Here are a few I know of available here in the UK, not sure about Canada though.

Arcadia Original Tropical
Arcadia Freshwater Tropical
Interpet Triton
Interpet Daylight Plus
Hagen Sun-glo
Hagen Aqua-glo

If you want to simulate sunlight but not too bright then go for sun-glo. The best I'd say is the Interpet Daylight Plus, it is really bright and has 4-band wavelength giving outstanding colouration on the fish. If you add a reflector you will double the light output too.

The only consideration you will need to bear in mind is any light sensitive fish. You need to provide shaded areas i.e. wood, artificial plants, rocks, slate etc. I'd also recommend only switching the lights on when you are there to prevent algae build-up.

To acheive the 'clear blue' affect you will need a suitable background. You can buy or DIY a simulated ocean background which graduates shades of blue, lighter at surface, darker at bottom. Or you can paint the outside of your tank your desired colour, bearing in mind that it will be permanent!! Interpet also do a Blue Moon light but I am unsure as to its effectiveness.

I hope this has helped Cassandra, good luck ;)
