I've always believed it and always applied it, but apparently latest tests have shown that this is not true and only assists to building fat and not very helpful in conditioning.....I also used beef heart to try condition my Oscars and this has also now been disproved.

Question 1... How do you feel about feeding live fish??
Question 2.... Do you think it (or beef heart) has any conditioning value??

i feed my larger fish on fry when its available as my platys produce so many. i keep 5 or so and let nature take its course with the rest. apar from that my fish get a diet of brine shrimp, red mozzie larvae, freshly hatched maggots, little flies, lettuce, cucumber and fish flakes (not all at the same time of course!!!)

Feeders from the lfs are awful for any fish, I dont care if its a piscavore or not. The feeder guppies and goldies are inaddequatly fed (most of the time) and live in very overstocked tanks. Therefore they offer little nutrition of value to your fish as well as they have a very good chance of introducing an illness into your tank....

Even when home grown, it is usually best to feed only occationally live fish. Most fish need more than what a homegrown feeder can provide and hence the use of manufactured food pellets/flakes and wafers are there to be the main food staple of a fishes diet. Some species of fish are true piscavores and may only take live food (fish and/or shrimps) so the best thing to do in this case is to gut load the feeders you breed with lots of vegetable matter as well flake and pellet foodstuffs. This will ensure the predator fish is getting its proper nutrition from the fish it is eating.
