Ok, my ten year old son put 'small fish tank' on his christmas list. My parents in thier wisdom got him a five gallon complete setup. I thought great until they told me it comes with a UGF. Not a major prob, but I will give him sand for substrate so out goes the UGF. What is the best filter for a tank as small as this?

a small internal filter would probably be best

in such a small tank, perhaps something like the Elite Stingray, which doesn't take up too much space.

An internal was what I was thinking. What are the stingrays like, the only internals I have used are the fluvals and interpet.

I've never used one myself.

I don't think they have much capacity, but for a lightly stocked tank, it should be ok.

Whisper makes a small internal filter. I had a whisper hang on back filter running on my 5 gallon and it kept the water crystal clear. You can get a penquin mini or one of those box type filters that run off an air pump. Right now I have a regent 10 (one of those penquin knock-offs that come in 10 gallon aquarium kits) running on my 5 gallon fry tank and it works great. I'm not sure if all of these are available in the UK though.

Thanks, will look out for the wisper as we have those, never seen a regent though.

jflowers my son has a 30ltr tank which is a 6gal i think. he has a fluval2 + in his tank at the mo, which does the the job ok. But sooner or later i will be changing over to a fluval 104 external filter, for two reasons 1. more space in the tank with the box style filter removed 2. The larger amount of benficial bacteria the filter can hold compared to any internal filter. good luck with hte set up . ;)
