I uh... got banned from the local wallmart for asking an employee about the all of the dead bettas (well, more like accusing the store for all of them being dead). He was all "calm down lady, they're only fish," and I kindof flipped out, shoved a stack of dead bettas at him, and made a gigantic scene of screaming and ranting about proper fish husbandry. Not the most mature way to go about things, but I was having a really bad day.
On the good side, my freak out has results in two signs in the aquatics section, from what I've heard: "Even if your vase has a plant, the betta still needs food" and "Do not stack the betta cups; they need air." The fish are still taken care of poorly, but at least they're not suffocating/starving.

I've only been to the aquarium section of one Wal-Mart and I was actually quite impressed. Clean tanks and healthy fish. I've seen some pretty awful LFSs though.

I'm surprised Walmart hasn't expanded out side the norther us continent....

They have, but luckilly not the fish department Here in the UK, ASDA is owned by Walmart, although not many people think it as that.

I was about to say that in the UK, Asda is owned by Walmart. But you beat me to it

Don't [think] it stands for anything, but someone will probably prove me wrong. Its one of the bigest supermarkets, like Walmart without the living things (apart from some plants). They sell most stuff, although not as much as Walmart as we have more than enough chain stores for everything- diy, gardening, food, pets etc...

im sorry to anyone but Wal-Mart is amazing!

prices are real good,they have cheap paintballing equipent, good candy and there fish equipment is cheap and fine. there fish might not be that great but for my local wal-mart they arent that bad. just yesterday i bought 5 zebra danios and it only cost me like 6$! Wal-Mart rules.

If you like to see the domination of the market by a company that engages in illegal activiy, as well as exploitation and unethical business practices, such as buying their products from sweatshops, engaging in anti-union activity, and hiring illegal immigrants, go for it. I live out in the boonies and the nearest lfs is over 45 miles away but Wal-Mart is only 18 miles so I get most of my fish and supplys there. The fish department is very clean and all the tanks are well maintained. The fish I buy from Wal-mart have been very hardy and I have not gotten a sick one yet. I also like the fact that their fish are guaranteed for 90 days. I bought a common pleco there a year ago at 2 inches long and now I find out that he is a Leopard Sailfin pleco L165 and is at a healthy 9 inches and still going strong! I love Wal-Mart!!!

There aren't any where I live and I havent said anything about them, cos I have never bin in one, however we have a chain store named tucano here in Slovenia that is franchise (not sore I said the right word (like every store has it's own manager)) and I have heard of about only 2 out of about 35 that they are good, unfortunately none of those are near me. Not to mention that mostly their animls cost too much (a lot).
