Beginner Advice

Okay..What I've done so far, is set up the tank, with the heater and filter and added the Aqua plus. Only problem is, on my filter (Fluval 2 plus) there seems to a cap at the top which makes the water coming out bubble or not bubble, whats best and why? I've put the heater next to the filter at the back left hand corner this is okay yeah? Should I do a test after I've added my Aqua as I did one before too? And finally when should I start adding Ammonia? Cheers!

you can add the ammonia now.

Re bubbles, the answer is more towards a matter of taste, you don't need them so long as the output nozzle is close to the surface of the water and causes it to ripple, it is this action that creates the aeration and oxygenation in the tank when fish are in it, Ive got a fluval 3 in 2x of my tanks nd i don't bother with the bubble make effect nor have an air stone in the tanks i just keep the output nozzle towards the surface of the water and i have no problems, it is down o user preference.

I believe that the surface watter rippling provides much More aeration and oxygenation than having bubbles shoot out.

If you can get a hold of a liquid maser test kit that would be much much better than the test strips, they are far more accurate and essayer to read than the strips and well worth the extra money spent on them.

The heater position sounds good to me the filter sucking up the freshley warmed water and shooting it out across the tank.

Cheers. Appears the LFS didn't actually sell me Ammonia and instead sold me a Tetratest Ammonia Test Kit and a Tetratest Kit.. Ive got a bottle of Nutrafin Cycle..will this substitute for Ammonia or not?

Ive used the cycle products myself a while ago and dont think that they did all that much my 1st tank i set up took close to 2 months to cycle as i hadnt read all the cycle rules and just when by what the tetratec 60l tank came with and put some fish food in for it to decay to get the ammonia going.

others tho my be able to help a little more with this part than i.

Yeah, even with cycle products you need ammonia, if only to test that the cycle product has actually done its job. You should be able to get ammonia from a chemists, or boots its not expensive.

When cycling I believe that a temp around 30C is beneficial, and extra aeration can do no harm after all the bacteria you are trying to encourage are aerobic.

Anyone else?

Yup, make sure you have at least two nets; it's much easier to catch fish (if you ever need to) with two nets than one, believe me. If you're going to have lots of plants, get a small net, too, just in case you have to remove any dead fish; hopefully you won't, but no guarantees. I have to say you're going about this in exactly the right way and taking advice in the spirit it's given, too.
