Hello all,
Please be kind, it's been awhile and I need assistance getting back into the game. I have one betta in a 3 gallon tank right now. I am working on his 25 gallon fluval accent that I bought used. I have talked with a few that have owned the accent and they tell me the stock filter is really bad.
So first question to all of you is what bio media should I put in the stock filter of the fluval accent? I have been told different things from every pet store I goto. From my research I would say biohome ultimate, but where do I find it in the USA at a reasonable price?
For the mechanical filtration part I want to get rid of the costly replaceable cartridge and goto coarse, medium and fine filter foam. Where in the USA is a good source for mechanical foam filter material?
I still remember from back in the day when I was a wee lad, that mechanical filtration comes first so coarse foam then medium, and fine or polish foam. This is to sort out as much of the particles before it gets to the biological media and does not clog it. Then onto biological media, so I know I want a media that support aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, so I think biohome ultimate would be my best choice, what else out there supports anaerobic bacteria? And the we move on to chemical filtration which would be active carbon.
So I know I need to mod the stock filter set up on my accent. Has anyone done this? Does anyone have any advice on doing this?
Next I was thinking of adding a canister to the fluval 25 gallon accent. What canister do you all recommend? I was thinking the 206 or 306. But I am open to other options. On that note of a canister filter. I have a Betta and he does not like current. So how do I slow the current down on a canister filter??? Would a spray bar effectively reduce the current? How makes a good spray bar set up?
