I have some vintage Marineland Magnum canisters in storage… I always thought about keeping them, in case for any reason, that I wanted to go old school with the micron filter, and diatomaceous earth… I can’t imagine that ever happening, but today, I started wondering if I couldn’t use it to drive a large size UV light, as a canister with hoses, it could be rotated around to various tanks… but is there more value as a water”polisher”, or as a sterilization unit??? My tanks are all great right now, it shouldn’t hurt my plants, as long as they don’t get sucked through the unit… I do have one tank that is a little cloudy, the sterilizer will fix that??? But won’t remove the tannins???

Just wondering what to do with them, I’m happy with my current filters… so, what to do with them??? Put them on yard sale, and if they don’t go, throw them in the recycle???

There are many still using them that would like them or for parts, run them in the classifieds.

If I remember them correctly, they ran hot and probably guzzled current. But they could polish water for photography. I agree that you should give selling them a shot. I know when they showed up in club auctions, no one ever bid on them. But online, maybe someone wants them.

Yes, some of the longtime posters on here still have and use them. If anything, just post them for FREE, if they will pay the postage. As for polishing, they have the same media as a HOB. You can clean them monthly instead of weekly and sometimes use more cost effective media. Also if you are running 125 gallon tanks like I do, they are definitely more cost effective, IMHO. I think it is a misconception that they are polishers only. The UV can be used or not, with the flip of a switch.
