I’ve had my tank for a year and the fish have happily swum around with the loss of one minnow who had I later found jumped out of the tank! However my male beta is not active or behaving like he used to. He only moves when I put food in (I feed every other day). He is very active then then goes and lays down in the long ferns all the time. I don’t know how old he was when I bought him a year ago and I gather they live for approx 3 years. I tested the water and it’s ok - I water change approx 10 percent water a week and the others are all fine! Do you think his behaviour indicates he is getting old, I can’t see any spots or problems on his skin which is the same vibrant colour. He spends the whole time upside down in these ferns!

This has happened to my betta when he started to become more elderly, Make sure you keep an eye on him to see any signs of disease. For now just keep on top on water changes and keep his environment clean, It is also possible he could have some disease. keep an eye on him and see if he has any other symptoms or abnormal things on him.

To me your betta looks like he is bloated, you can try to feed your betta peas for a week so that it can clear the blockage. fast your betta for 2 days on the 3rd day feed him peas, fast again for 2 more days feed him peas again on the 3rd day.

If that does not work you can try to use aquarium salt/rocksalt as a treatment for him.

Do his scales look raised?

Bettas that you buy at fish stores are usually 6 months-1 year old

Thanks for your reply. I think he looks bloated too, who would think he could be constipated!! I’ll try the peas as I’m sure it’s not just an elderly old boy having a nap!

NP. Its really common in bettas since they never know when to stop eating and they're always begging for food even when they are not hungry. Because of this a lot of beginners fall victim to overfeeding their bettas thinking that they are hungry.

I have fallen victim to their tricks also.?

Hopefully the peas help! Good-luck!

make sure to keep the tank clean, i think the fish food is causing him to be upside down. not a betta expert tho
