Can anyone advise me as to why i cant get these fish to breed im adding salt feeding them well (bloodworm, peas, brine shimp and earthworms chopped) ive had them well over a year now, ive one male and one female of about 4" and 3" respectfully they are in along with 3 firemouths,5 cribs,4 bronze corydoras in a juwel 120 aquarium.

those are cool fish check their PH and research and make sure they dont need high or low ph , water hardness or something like that. I dont know much about them other than they look pretty cool. 8)

Cheers for that, though ive checked the ph and its to be min7+ and ive the water at 7.3 trying to keep others happy too not sure whats going on with them :-(

im adding salt

That is a great setup for them, but if you really want to breed them, a 25 - 40 gallon species tank is probably the way to go. They are quite predatory of their fry, so keen observation will be required, and your other tankmates would enjoy a nibble as well. Maybe they are breeding for you!

As well, they are a softwater species and do not need salt added to the water.

These fish are true livebearers, I.E. viviparous instead of ovoviviparous like most mexican livebeares (Poecillia, Girardinus, Limia, etc.) Because of this, they will have far fewer fry less times per year, and the fry will be much larger at birth (up to 1" for this species!)

Keep trying. By the sounds of it, yours are full-grown and well conditioned. Try a cool water change, or a warmer period, or dropping the water level - all tricks to sometimes stimulate a breeding response. :kana:

Good luck,
/Kris

not sure about your specific fish but I have a pair of platy's that don't like each other, they have never. I've had them almost a year and the male (dumb) stays with my black molly( big moma) and the female ( dumber) stays with my very big zebra dania ( Convict) I think I have a tank of handicapped and mentally challenged fish :-( that don't know what species they are, never gonna have any fry at this rate :/
