don't be a twit
hello all...
I'm trying to collect information regarding the needs of fancy goldfish in order to create a pinnable topic containing basic information for newbies. I personally find it very frustrating to keep having to explain what a fancy goldfish is, why you shouldn't keep them in ponds or with commons, how you should keep fancy goldfish, etc.
I would really appreciate any corrections or additions to the information I've posted below. I'm not really a coldwater person, but I do get fed up with explaining the same four or five facts over and over again.
-----------------------------------------
1 ) fancy goldfish:
---have been specially bred for hundreds of years to produce certain characterisitics
---typically have unusual body features, such as extra long fins or bulgy eyes
---typically only grow to about 8 inches in length
2 ) fancy goldfish should not be kept with common goldfish because fancies:
---typically don't swim as well as common goldfish can swim
---won't grow nearly as large as common goldfish
---are likely to be nipped by common goldfish
---cannot compete for food with common goldfish
---are not as cold-resistant as common goldfish
3 ) because of their breeding, fancy goldfish should be kept in:
--- water that will never drop much below 40F
--- water that will never rise much above 75F
--- at least ten gallons of space per fancy goldfish
--- groups (goldfish are very sociable)
4 ) kept properly, a fancy goldfish should:
--- be a very active swimmer in the middle of the tank
--- grow to an adult size quickly
--- live for 15 years or longer
--- always be interested in food (but that doesn't mean it always needs to eat! )
5 ) some basic types of fancy goldfish include:
--- black moors
--- orandas
--- shubunkin (?)
--- celestial eyes
--- suggestions welcome
