This was Barney,he was our lesser sulphur crested cockatoo,he was part of our family for 22 years, sadly he died last year,in the april we noticed a lump had come up under his wing,we took him a specialist avian vet,who said it was a tumour and needed to be removed asap if Barney had any chance of surviving, but the op and anesthetic would be risky,So after taking a big decision and decided to let barney have the op,
Barney had the op,they managed to remove the tumour, but said because of where it was barney may lose part use of his wing,For 2 weeks we nursed barney, giving meds, for him to keep biting off the end of the syringe each time,i'm sure he done this on purpose, then we took him for a check up,the vet decided to clip the flight feathers off his droopy wing has he kept standing on it when moving around, then also removed the collar that he had around his neck has it had healed up nicely...

Once we got him home Barney started cleaning the area around the wing and where they had removed the lump,he appeared quite anxious trying to clean his feathers,i rang the emergency vet has barney was getting quite rough trying to clean off the blood etc, they said just to let him calm down, turn the lights off and leave him in peace,he'll be fine!

Well for some reason we got up early (5am)on checking Barney there was blood everywhere,up the walls, all over him it was awful!we rushed him to the 24 hr vets that had been treating him, they said he had damaged a blood feather with his preening and it wouldn't stop bleeding, again they performed an emergency op this time to remove the wing,
I'm sure Barney knew something we didn't,even though he was weak from the bloodloss,he wouldn't let go of dads finger with his beak, and he just kept looking at us...

Well they done the op,we got a call to say he'd come around but they would keep him in,well we were so happy,,,but that was short lived an hour later they phoned again with the dreaded news...Barney had passed away!! well to say we were heartbroken is an understatement!

They reckon he just gave up,he was so weak, they tried to revive him but he had gone.
The following day we wanted to bring barney back home, how i ever got there and back through the tears i don't know.
Even now,its hard to think about him without fighting back the tears,he has his own little grave in the garden.
He was such a character, barked at the dog, laughed, danced,he was such a little joy!

No matter what pet they are,no matter how big or small, they are your life, your family!!
And over a year on we still miss him like crazy!!
And thank you for letting me ramble on about him,it does help the heartache

After his first op

hi what a sad story
stunning bird as well i love birds more than my fish i cant imagine how hard it is to go through all that
regards scot :)

am so sorry to hear that :-(

its devestating when you have to lose a pet, of any sort.

please dont think me cruel, i would never hurt my fish, but when a fish dies it isnt like losing a pet. i still miss Biscuit to this day, and can be found talking to his ashes, but the only issue is (after 2 years ish) i can now laugh at Biscuit, as somehow his ashes got wet and he's one solid lump!

it is hard, but if you feel sad think of all the good Barney did for you, 22 years is a long time to have any pet.

and if you need to, ramble away! i'm sure someone would be willing to listen

oh so sorry for your loss

Yes!... After 22 years they do leave a gap in one's daily routines and it takes a lot longer than a year to get over it... but never totally...
