I recently placed some barley straw into my pond to help prevent the occurence of green water which often comes about every summer. I'm a little concerned about the barley straw since it acts to prevent green water by rotting and giving of particular anti-algal toxins. When the straw eventually starts to degrade (I'm told it takes about 1 month) will it contribute to the amount of ammonia in the pond? There is of course, 0 ppm of ammonia at the moment but I want to ensure the barley straw doesn't add to this since I'd honestly prefer green water over an ammonia problem.

Any input would be appreciated as I haven't got any answers from a non-biased group of people before.

Thanks,

Mark.

I use to put it in tights and leave in the pond for 6 weeks then remove it no mess with little ammonia change.
