This may sound really stupid, but do barbs desperately need a heater, or would they be ok in a tank that is room temperature? The room is fairly warm  , and if necessary I could add warm water in once a day  (if that would be ok :sly: ). Just wondering...

I personally wouldn't advise it. It's not just a case of keep the temperature "warm", you also need to try and keep it regulated, sudden fluctuations will stress the fish.

good point, do you think they'd be ok in colder water then?

btw, when i say oclder water, i mean no heater.
Barbs, in general, like temps in the mid 70's. I wouldn't go w/o a heater.

Barbs are tropical fish. They live in warm water... mid seventies at least. Unless you live in an abnormally warm house, room temp water would be too cold for barbs, imo.

Edit: Oops! Sorry smb... didn't see ya there when I made my post :alien:

OTOH, White Cloud Mountain minnows and rosy minnows are from temperate climes and can cope with unheated tanks. Just thought that might be useful to know.
