I have a 2ft x 1ft shallow tank. About 1ft deep. Would a few barbs, say 6 be OK in there on their own with no other fish?

Which species of barb? The smaller species might be OK but not the larger species.

Also if I dont put them in the shallow tank I will need to get a larger tank. If I put everything that is currently in the shallow, including the filter, gravel etc will I still need to cycle the new tank?

No, I'm afraid tiger barbs need a bigger tank. They need to be kept in a group of at least 10 to 12 in a tank at least 80 cm/32 inches long. These are nippy fish and if kept in too small a group, the fish at the bottom end of the pecking order would be picked on.

Assuming the shallow tank is cycled, then yes, moving everything over to another tank means you don't need to cycle it. But if the shallow tank is not cycled you will need to cycle the bigger tank.

That's really helpful. Thank you. I have made a bit of a mistake by rehoming 3 green tiger barbs and being told they would be would be fine in a small 25 litre tank I have. I foolishly didn't read up on them properly until it was too late and realise a 25 litre tank is way too small and they also need to be ina group ogf more than3. I am going to get a much bigger tank and get a few more barbs and have them just in single species tank. I have one betta only in the shallow tankso he can go in the 25 klitre and then I will put everything from the shallow tank into a new bigger tank so should work out in the end. It is just going to cost me a new tank!
