Badis...

Mine acts more like a cichlid than anything else. It recognizes me, is aggressive, and looks like one. Gouramis, Cichlids, and badis's (possibly more) are all branched off from perches and are related. The badis only has three in it's particular species, Badis badis badis, Badis badis burmiculis (i think) and Badis badis siamensis (mine) They have scales almost exactly like cichlids and for a while I believe they were considered cichlids until it was discovered the scaled were different. Since they were such a a small group of fish they got thrown into the oddball section.

Sorry about my previous post, I was waiting for my brain to kick in

EDIT: When I read that, it makes me sound smart

They are members of the Perch family which doesn't fit into any of the other categories which is why they go in oddballs.

Lovely little fish - I have had the scarlet badis (badis burmanicus) in the past but they can be difficult to keep as they are sometimes very picky eaters.

HTH, Eddie

There are two subspecies of this fish Badis badis badis: Badis badis siamensis and Badis badis burmanicus. The former is blue and the later predominantly red. Both are small, carnivorous fishes that look rather like some South American Dwarf Cichlids. Sometimes known as chameleonfishes, they come from still waters in India, and are relatively peaceful Miscellameous fishes. A great little fish but as some may know they won't hesitate to eat smaller tankmates.

Hey, you left out the siamese badis, Badis badis aemensis or siamensis I think. That's what I have :p Mine attacks/ eats guppies

Okay call me presumptious but can i ask ias it me or does it seem odd that it can change its colour at will like a chameleon therefore making it an Odd fish so therefore an oddball?

Awww man, I didn't know they got big enough to eat small fish! Hmph. I saw some scarlets at the lfs a few weeks ago and dreadfully wanted them. However, these were probably under an inch long... not harmless for long I now know. :p
