I was at Maidenhead Aquatics today and asked if they sold or gave out any matrure media (no, by the way) and they started talking about bacteria in a bottle products which I kindly refused. Then, they opened a fridge and pulled out a little pastic can (transparent and had a ring-pull) and stated that "there is amonia and nitrite in this can so that the bacteria can live". Again, I politely declined as I had heard nothing about it.

Sadly I didnt ask for the product name (stupid), but has anyone heard/seen/used this?

I'm five weeks into a fish-in cycle (new to the hobby, did not know better) without seeing any trace of nitIte and was wondering if this stuff could help?

havent heard of this one but it does sound promising to be honest. If u really are stuck with ur cycle maybe give it a go, i know i would..in fact im tempted to do it to get my fishless cycle sped up..as tetra safestart has done nothing for me..not processed a single bit of ammonia in the 24 hours it has been in the tank

if its refrigerated im guessing it works...what was it called?

Sounds interesting but I have doubts about the amount of live bacteria. To feed the bacteria you need a ammonia source flowing over the media in a constant stream to feed it which the can does not give. The can is refrigerated though which slows the growth/death of the bacteria so if the bacteria was stored in the can to begin with then perhaps its valid if it was recently canned. To many factors unknown to say if its valid i think. Another question I have is weather it was just the can of water and ammonia or did it have something like a filter sponge in it?

i have heard of that before, and i have heard it works well.. but is rather expensive

i cant remember the name of it though.. it had a kind of weird name IIRC

edit* i found it, its called bio-spira

and it is no different than buying "live sand" that is in a bag, its not a joke or a way to make money off of people

Not only just an food source, but the bacteria also need oxygen to do their thing. Being in a sealed can, they will use up all the oxygen available pretty quickly, and then die.

In general, these products are more miss than hit. Once in a while, some of them will work. Some members had experience with Bio-Spira which was also refrigerated. But, at least as many reported that their bottles didn't help much if any.

I'd always suggest a fishless cycle even with these products. You can keep adding the ammonia and if the product does work for you, then your tests will register the 0's in very short time. If the product didn't work, then at least no fish were harmed.

Stupidly I forgot to ask.

I didn't get a close look, but it looked like there were small blue balls in the can covered by a solution.

I know Oasis in Salford have done in in the past - not been there for ages though.

Don't know if it works though -- sure I've heard say it has the wrong type of bacteria?

Ive heard positive results form bactinettes so it cant be that bad =] beside MH back it, so it cant be that bad? right now its JBL filter start they sell so maybe give that a try?

there is amonia and nitrite in this can so that the bacteria can live".

From what you've posted there, thats not bacteria in a can. Its the stuff the bacteria feeds off, so it may help the cycle but not instacycle it.

I've seen hundreds of threads on here about bottled bacteria, but I've yet to see one that has conclusively proven to instantly cycle a tank.
