what would bring the colour of the fish out best a black background or a natural looking one??

Black from what i've seen / read. I tryed it with a bin liner and oil on an old tank but it looked terrible. but would look good if done with paint or card etc

yeah ive heard bin liner looks good if you do it right my mate painted the back of his and it looks awesome

Black or very dark blue work best imo. I am using the bin liner on one of my tanks. I didn't use the oil method though, i just used sellotape and stuck it on. Also if your tank isn't too sizeable and you can find a decent piece then go to your local B&Q etc and get a wallpaper sample. Works a treat! 3 of my tanks are currently using some of their more upmarket wallpapers...

I'd go black. Stands out loads with fish / plants. Bin bags work well mint  :good:

I have a 3D background from Juwel it's dark grey. I had black paper on the tank before hand and they stood out much more with the black, but the 3D just looks so sexy ;) haha.

Bin liner and oil? You oil the liner and use it to make the liner stick to the glass?

My walls are painted moss green, and its a great background for my tanks. But I may be biased since I like green so much.

Never thought of green before. May try that sometime.

i've just used a printed one from my lfs, i think they are ok to be honest :)

I use bin liner, but i don't bother trying to get it flat with oil or by stretching it or anything likee that; I just let it hang behind; I like the wrinkly look!

I use a piece of black fleece fabric. It doesn't reflect any light so the tank looks like it goes forever. And, it's inexpensive!

I need a background for my tank too.

T.O.S, do you just tape the fleece to the back?

I quite want something slightly unusual but don't want to pay loads of money for a 3D background.

Yes, I just use clear packing tape. I like it because it doesn't reflect light and is cheap.

How about a piece of polystyrene with bits and pieces picked out of it and then painted to create a 3D background on the cheap? It would need to be siliconed to the back though. This is a project i am hoping to try soon.

I saw this vid on youtube a few weeks ago. I think the end result looks incredible.

No good for me though coz obviously you cant have fish in there before you build it!

Take a look though, it's really cool.
