Yeah he will be fine in the garden for a while with you, they love exploring, just make sure its not cold, and defo no longer than an hour or two. Mine are inside at the mo, just wondering around the front room with a cardboard box of shredded paper that they use for a bed. I hate it when torts are kept locked up so they have the run of the room!
They do carry the salmonella bacteria though so make sure you wash your hands well and dont let little kids near, just in case.
He's prob no older than a year, so you have a lot longer to go before you think about hibernating.
Remember never ever ever drill a hole in his shell like they used to, its very painful for them as their shells are full of nerve endings.
Also, give him strawberrys, sounds odd but they LOVE them!
