hey all,

I knew my dalmation molly was pregnant but didnt expect her to drop so soon, I have counted 6 babies (alive) but only managed to catch 5 i currently have them in a glass. only thing is am at work tomorrow and wont be able to get a breader net, i can only go out on thursday to get one, Can i keep my baby fry in this net untill thursday afternoon? or will it stress them out to much , let me know what you think, thanks (i have also attached some picks of the 1 fry i couldnt catch hiding in my tank very sweet)

Kitchen sponges contain antibacterial agents that may kill your fish. Do you have any real or fake plants that will fit in the net? They will like having a place to hide and that may help keep them off the bottom of the net.

I think av sorted it.. this is what av done its a plastic container (inside the fishing net i have) with some gravel inside so they can hide around in.. and the water flows in through the top so its getting some circulation this is best i can do am affraid at the moment untill i get a proper net.. let me know what you think

congrats on your little babies!!!!!!!

i too had a suprise drop from one of my platys. mine are in one of those floating plastic breeding containers, you should see the angels and gouramis trying to eat them through the plastic

atleast now your fry will be more safe with that plastic container around them :good:

I'm not really convinced this is a good solution, however it's the best you have right now I guess. I had a similar setup for some catfish fry, only I had large holes in the side of the plastic container, covered in flyscreen to let more water through and keep the fish out, and even with this extra water flow, it just doesn't let the waste of the fry get out. The water just gets so toxic in the small area.

In your situation, I'd scoop up some tank water and pour it into the plastic container from time to time to cycle the water / toxins out of the container. I'm not sure about all fry, but catfish fry are extremely dirty and the water gets toxic real fast. Obviously don't do it so hard that the fry come out but you have the net there just in case.

Also just leaving them in a soft net by themselves was a worse idea for me, my sharks sucked the babies through the soft net and sucked them to death.

Good luck with them, let us know how you go.

hey thanks for the advice they are doing good 1 died but he was not that good when i caught him yesterday anyway,

but i was doing some vacuming and 3 more was inside the vacum tube! still alive! :D haha so i put them in with there siblings now we have 7 fry there could be more in the tank but i cannot see good because i have poor lighting in the livingroom (besides the fish tank light haha) and its night time now so i might have a little gentle play with the gravel tomorrow to see if i can find more :D :D :D oh yer and i have just found a another baby fry TOTALLY DIFFERENT TO THE others i have i think its a platy fry but they are suposed to be smaller than mollys if i attach a pick can any1 tell me how old it is.. it looks like my mickeymouse platy but she was to young to have babies.. :S only other orange fish is a male balloon molly and a rainbow platty ( but hardly any orange) thanks PS i have also discoverd my snail not sure what type tho.

thank you!, yer i think i have another platy too but its not orange its white/gray colour i havnt got a photo but i can tell by the shape of its fin's and it has black vains on the fins haha but what i dont understand is, my pregnant platy hasnt given birth yet she is very big still, and hasnt turned square yet if u get me. and my mickeymouse platy looks still too young to 'get pregnant!' haha.. do you have any idea how old the platy's could be? i heard they are born alot smaller than molly fry.
thanks,
Leann

i'd say probably a week old, looks about the size of mine of that age (comparing to new born molly size)

the other could of been pregnant but only had a few because she's young, i think with platies they can breed any time after 12 weeks, or as soon as sexable
