Cucumber cucumber the magical vegetable just didn't work in my head..... but I was waiting for someone to call me on that, gold star to you :hooray:

I'm well lost now - I thought beans were a vegetable too!

And the only rhyme I know about beans is ..... "Beanz Meanz Heinz".
Mind you there was another one at school (a looooooong time ago) - "Beans, beans, good for your heart; the more you eat, the more you ...."

Well is was a dodgy playground rhyme, a lot of not so poetic licence was involved

"Beans Beans the magical fruit, The more you eat the more you p**p"

All based on the same theme mind you

That's like saying a banana is a plant. :p Legumes have fruit, but are not fruits. I think they fall somewhere inbetween vegetable and fruit. Plant taxonomy is not one of my strong suits.

Wikipedia about legumes

But Wikipedia also says

Having an enclosed seed and developing from a flower, cucumbers are scientifically classified as a fruit. Much like tomatoes and squash, however, their sour-bitter flavor contributes to cucumbers being perceived, prepared and eaten as vegetables. It should be noted that vegetable is a purely culinary term and as such there is no conflict in classifying cucumber as both a fruit and a vegetable

 :p

But Wikipedia is not exactly the most reliable resource either. It's probably right but then it might also be wrong or mistaken too. Vegetable/fruit/plants are just confusing. Especially when you try to classify them.

How about Encarta:

cucumber
- fruit used in salads: a long fruit with dark green peel and crisp white watery flesh that is usually eaten raw in salads and sandwiches or pickled
- plant with long green fruit: a climbing or trailing annual plant of the gourd family that produces cucumbers.

legumes
- seed or pod of leguminous plant: a seed, pod, or other part of a plant such as a pea or bean, used as food
- leguminous plant: a plant that has pods as fruits and roots that bear nodules containing nitrogen-fixing bacteria.

??

I think the statement that the plant isn't the fruit; the seed or seed container is is probably the closest to right.

You have done more looking into it, it seems, Teelie, so what are we looking for? :look:
