Baby Blue

they can be very sensitive fish even at 4-5 inches. the pics show yours to be quite dark for a juvi and the eye doesnt seem glossy. i would say it was just a bad choice of ebjd if im being honest.

they are a great fish and do require very special care at such a young age, they either make it or they dont im affraid.

You can have mine he is 1year and 4". I would never get another ebjd again. Mine looked great at a young fish now he is ugly. I kept mine in a 20gal alone so I could make sure he eat and was well. He was never shy always came swimmig to the glass when he saw. But ever fish is differant.

If you don't have a good breeder to buy from don't bother. The lfs ebjd are poor quality yes you can get real lucky and get a nice one. Most of the time you will not.

Sorry for the loss of your Jack, havnt been online much lately and only just spotted this thread.

Electric Blue Jack Dempseys can unfortunately be very temporamental fish, more so than the standard Jack. With Juvis it is very hit miss whether they survive or not. I've read (and experienced) this fragility myself. I lost my female a few weeks after purchase, luckily my male did very well and to this day is a magnificent specimen.

Colouration of Electrib Blue Jacks is another sore point. As Juvi's they all exhibit the sky blue/dark blue banding that looks adoreable. Its another case of 50:50 whther they grow up looking good or not so good. I don't know why but with so many myths and uncertainty where the Electric Blue came from, and whether it is natural or not, it makes it hard to know why this is.

Jack Dempseys in general can be very timid fish. Certainly in the last few months mine have become increasingly more skittish and elusive. You just have to be patient with them and give them the right environment. They are very rearding fish to keep and breeding behaviour is fascinating to witness. They are such tentative parents. Dithers are a very good idea with Jacks, they have to be the right kind though to bring the best out of your Jacks. I find Firemouth Cichlids work well with mine :)

Again i'm sorry you lost your Jack, i'd advise not rushing into getting another one, but certainly don't rubbish the idea as they are beautifull fish to keep (sometimes ;))
