We today received some axolotl eggs. My partner liked the funny creatures (ok so do I  ) and so we thought it might be fun to attempt to raise our own. It could go horribly wrong but if we dont try how would we know?
Here are some pics of some of the eggs:

There was one hatchling among the eggs, he twitched when first moved him but not moved since so hoping that this is the first 24 hour period where they dont move much. Here is the fry

It looks like they are all going to be wild colours, so watch this space. Will upload photos as they develop. We have live foods started in preparation.

hi, i think axolotls are great. i would get some, but i'm not allowed another tank. :( One of my Science teachers has 2, and they breed constantly. i hope it all goes well, and you have lots of axolotls.

cheers :good:

Thanks guys well watch this space as we are pretty new to this, it could go horribly wrong though between us we have read a lot of sources. We have the one free swimming hatchling, not moving much but he has made the first 24 hours with us, here is hoping to more eggs hatching soon!

You got a what?! I just googled it surely that could take your arm off! Blimey Nelly you are getting lots of big fishies  The missus is welcome to have some when we grow ours if she can wait a couple of months? (Oh and these arent my project they are Alex's of course ;) though Im smitten  )

Well we recieved 27 eggs total and 12 have hatched so far, most wrigglers but two we have to keep an eye on as they are a little limp, rest seem to be doing good though :good:

Another small update, they are moving a lot more feeding well, we still have the 25. Next Tuesday/Wednesday we should start to see front limb development :good:

hope this goes well!
we had over 100 hatch at college and there is only about 20 left. They are about 5 weeks old now.
They are really hard to raise. Good luck, and if you have any tips pass them along ;)

Thanks so much Ryefish :good: Can I ask what death rates there were during what period (were they new hatchlings, as they started to grow?)

My tutor tried to raise some the first time round and she had only one go past the four week mark before it died. But these ones are 5 weeks and there is still quite a few left. There has only been quite low losses each week with this batch, with only a few each day.

She said the problem with them is feeding them, and getting them past eating newly hatched brine shrimp and on to bigger, easier to keep food. The brine shrimp dont last very long in freshwater and the Axolotl's wouldn't last very long in the salt water. There is a fair bit to do with water current as well i believe, my tutor told me that the axolotls won't eat unless the shrimp swim past their face, but (dont quote me on this lol) i dont think axolotl's do well in a current lol.

If you can get them past the stage where they move on to larger food then you will be fine. I think my tutor is moving the baby Axolotls on to Daphnia - ill have to check that though.

I have a picture i took a few weeks ago lol. Ill try and get an updated one if there is any still alive after our two week easter break
