Hi all,

I'm away for the weekend, which roughly work out as 4 feeds. What is the best to do?

* Leave them and just continue usual feeding upon return

* Buy one of the slow release blocks?

* Buy an auto feeder?

I've written off putting more food in and leaving them to it as the last time they were over fed (care of the boy  ) 3 died...

Also will leaving to light off on the tank off the weekend do them any harm?

Thanks in advance!

Your first option is fine..... and you're right... when you get back.... feed as normal.. do not give that extra to make up for the missed meals. The light thing too... leave it off for the weekend.

It can be a good idea to gradually re-introduce the feeding when you come back. ie. feed a half portion first couple of times, then increase it gradually until you get back to feeding normal again. This prevents a sudden big load on the filter which it may not be used to after your holiday.

Cheers :good:

BTT

yep dont worry about it most fish can easily go 5-7 days with no affect to them, just dont feed extra dry foods.

what you can do is get lots of livefood such as blood worm or daphina and this will live in the tank for a couple of days will it's all eaten

Is there anything that should be done b4 I leave? Is it a good idea to do a gravel clean and partial water change so that the tank is "as clean as possible" or does it not really matter for such a short period of time?

Just keep up the normal routine, less food means less waste produced.

Does not matter for such short period, will do no harm, but rather leave as is.

Wicked! Thanks guys!

What are you feeding suggestions for longer periods (week -10days)? In that instance I'd plan to get a timer for the lights, but can the fishies be left that long without being fed?

in theory they should be ok, TBH though I dont know if I would be comfortable leaving them for 10 days without a feed, though I bet there are a fair few members here that have done it.

For that amount of time, I'd do a 40% waterchange before I went away, then ask someone I trusted to pop in twice/3 times a week and give them a pre-measured feeding.

I have been away for 10 days before I just let them starve. They eat the infusoria in the moss and seemed to nibble at the elodea and algae. Fish were guppies, endlers, betta, snails, shrimp and guppy/endler fry. In the wild they may not be fed for 2 weeks or more, you could add some live food but mine generally clear out the tank within 4 hours when I do that in gorging.

Healthy adult fish can easily go for two weeks with no food. They do this quite often in the wild, nobody comes by to feed them a couple of times daily.

Hey,
Igo away every weekend and leave my babies. I use an automatic feeder now but they use to be fine before I got that. I use to leave them for up to 4 days and they would still be fine. I ended up getting a feeder cos it was happening to frequently that I would not be around and I thought it unfair. I actually leave the light on for the weekend but after reading posts here think I will turn it off in future.
Good luck,
Darren
