Hi, I've just been looking for freshwater puffers around Melbourne, but havn't been able to find any :(

Just wondering if anyone from the area kept puffers and knew where you could get them.. (eastern subs pref)

Thanks :)

Aquariumfish.net has a great selection of puffers. See if they can ship to Australia. If not, I'm sure one of us members would buy one for you and ship it to you. I'd be willing to help.

odd, i'm having the exact same problem at the moment. Suddenly when I want some, the entire country seems to have a puffer shortage. One of my lfs even told me their exporter in Malaysia couldnt get hold of any....wonder whats going on...

I hope the numbers in the wild aren't declining to such an extent that people can't find any. I understand that puffers are so hard to breed in captivity that most of them are wild-caught, and so hopefully the aquarium demand is not putting so much pressure on wild populations that they can't sustain themselves.

Here's to hoping...

they are quite illegal in AUS. You could try and smuggle in the fry along with assorted fry of other fish but that would be the only way past the QT because they are easy fish to spot. stick to SW puffers or move.

And most stocks of wild caught puffers are fine. Puffer breeding is advanceing by leaps and bounds though even Fahakas have been captive bred. I just hope there are still mbus when I get set up to get one.
