At End Of My Tether Can I Cut His Fins?

Ok my betta has had fin rot for ever now I've used a whole bottle of king british fin rot , half bottle of melafix, some pimafix, Whole bottle of waterlife myaxzin and nothing is working. The tails getting quite close tothe body now and I'm worried if it gets to far I'll have to euthanise him. No other fins are affected except the tail. I've heard cutting the fins don't hurt so if I cut under the fin rot and continue treatment with melafix will this help at all??

has the tank got high nitrates, do you do any tests, any plants in their. if its rotting off i cant see cutting it off being any worse as a last resort. i wish you luck

no plants in there nitrates are <25 not got a good enough test to no anything more specific. no ammonia no nitrate

You must find the cause for your fin rot ,but the stress and probably pain you will cause by cutting
the tail will kill it,please don't cut the fish

I'm trying to but there isnt anything! I changehis water 50% every week sometimes 10% changes inbetween depending on if it gets dirty. It's heated and filtered and the stats are fine. Maybe I'll take the gravel out and have bare bottom will be easier to keep sparkling clean

Have you tried Maracyn-II? I had one fish with a split tail and this fixed it....but had another with tail rot and although it hasn't gotten worse, it hasn't grown back. Good luck! It's so hard to have a sick fish!!

Oh, taking the gravel out sounds like a good idea. I read that dirty gravel is what causes fin rot a lot of times on Bettas.

You need to find the cause of the fin rot.

Even if you do cut his fins (I don't recommend it) then if there is a fundamental problem it is likely the fin rot will come back.

I noticed that you are doing water changes on the tank, the meds that you are putting in, what do they say about water changes? Make sure you are using them properly.

Also that person on the link you posted sounds a bit mad - I mean what on earth made them think "I know I will cut that bit off". Personally, I wouldn't follow that advice.

i've heard of trimming betta fins before. I'd ask around in the betta forum and do some more research. It may be too late for that without endangering the fish I remember you saying that the finrot was clost to the body. I don't know much about this but I think I remember reading that trimming too close to the body can hurt the fish. Kinda like trimming cats claws. DO MORE RESEARCH BEFORE YOU TRY THIS.

Theres absolutly no problem with cutting a fin if you need to, it will grow back if done correctly. Andrew Soh explains how to do it in detail in his book 'Discus the Naked Truth'.
But as said, either get hold of the book if you can or do some research as doing it wrong is going to cause you and the fish major grief.
If you cant find any info, pm me and I will do a summary of why/when and how to do it - would prefer you to find out for yourself as its a lot of text

You cant get maracyn in the UK without a vets prescription

Whenever one of my Bettas comes down with finrot, I do water changes almost everyday...it's very frequent, but it made the disease stop and he eventually regrew all of his lost fins.

i wouldnt recommend doing a 50% water change unless their is something really bad in with your tank

personally i would stick with the 10 % water change not the 50%

when you added the treatments did you take the charcoal out of your filter?
the charcoal absorbs poisons etc and it considers the medication as a poison, it has no descrimination

i would see if you can get hold of some melafix and finrot treatment, do a small waterchange, add the treatment exactly as it tells you and please read on as some of the treatments often in small writing tell you to retreat the tank after so many days

finrot treatment is usually one of these

their is nothing wrong with cutting the fin and will grow back if done properly, please do a google search for it and follow the instructions

If I am not mistaken, the poster is already using MelaFix. BettaFix is the same but milder. Always reduce the amount of MelaFix for Bettas. The standard proceedure for treating Betta with fin rot is frequent water changes. As a matter of fact frequent water changes are an often recommended proceedure when there is infestation. The water changes reduce the load of infection or infestation. It is of course needed that meds be adjusted for water changes.

If you recommend a med, be sure that the med is appropriate for the fish. MelaFix at regular strength will kill a Betta.

I also would recommend frequent and large water changes.

I am sorry about the boy. Good luck. But unless you can find the med that will knock this one out with a KO it is not looking too good.
