I have just moved house.... I had a holding pool built for my fish until I could get a proper job done.... it holds about 410 gallons of water.... the filtration system I am using is a box with layers of foam... plastic balls and pumice stone.... the water is pumped into the top and runs clean out the bottom..... I also have a UV light on top of the box.... the water is pumped through that to help kill the algae.... what I need to know is how big or what type of filtration system do I need when I extend the pool to full size.... about 1,500 gallons at a guess.... maybe a little bigger.... with a waterfall feature in the corner.
I know bugger all about fish keeping, I don't even know the names of some of the breeds I have.... except guppies [too many to count], sword tails [10 or so], silver foils and gold foils mostly red tails but a couple that are not [15ish] and fan tails [5]... the rest are a mystery... got a few that look like piranha [10?]... and some small shark lookalikes [10] but the rest.... god knows.
I also need to know about natural airation for a pond Im having dug....... that will be about 35,000 gallons.... before I stock it

I should add I live in Thailand

Hi Geosamm, you'd be best posting this question in the ponds section, none of the filters usually made for tropical tanks would be big enough for your poind so you'd need a specific pond filter. I'm not at all familiar with pond filter manufacturers in Thailand I'm afraid!

hmmm, the best thing for us to do would be to identify what fish you have. Then we could go from there. If we could get pictures of all your different breeds, im sure we could ID them for you :)

have a look at something like sand filters ive heard they are good but can be costly other than that a cloverleaf multibay finter they are good

Cloverleaf Genesis

The “Genesis” range of multi bay in-line filtration systems are available in 3 sizes, and whilst generally emulating the design concept and standards of the “CL” range they are better suited to the mixed ornamental pond, or Koi pond where high fish loads are not present. Yet again the system can be installed in tandem, or in addition can make a super secondary system when connected to a skimmer unit. For certain the well engineered “Genesis” range is not a poor relation to anything, and can happily stand scrutiny and evaluation in comparison to many other leading manufacturers products.

Cloverleaf CL Pond & Koi Filters

Few manufacturers in the world have put as much effort into designing a flexible and good value range of multi-bay filters suitable for the Koi pond as Cloverleaf, and how refreshing to not only know that they are British but to acknowledge they offer first class technical support to customers/end users. Key features of this well constructed compact "CL" range are the options of the filters being pump or gravity feed (meaning below ground), whilst meanwhile being very simple to maintain. The incorporation of vortex bays, and skilful use of mechanical and biological bays using quality mediums encompassing good water flows are further attributes that make the range a superb and sound investment. For very large ponds all filters can be happily installed as pairs - linked to separate pumps or bottom drains. All systems are supplied complete with valves and waste kits, together with a heavy duty lid capable of withstanding the weight of most pondkeepers.

hi geosamm

they sound like tropical fish so shouldnt creat to much waste they arent dirty like koi or goldies.

i am a koi pond and goldfish pond keeper but it shoould be pretty simlar for a tropical pond ,

i have a kockney koi v5000 multibay and a fishmate 5000 pump on the koi pond,
the way i worked out the size of the filter was to double the size of the pond which is 2,500 ltr (uk) the pump as you can see is a 5000 it was on sale and same price as the smaller one but i have the flow reduced via the fountain attachment so i have a 2 hour contact time

i would think its pretty much the same for your pond 1500 pond=3000 filter with a light stock and low waste and a pump with a variable flow so you can get the water filter media contact time around one full pond cycle every 2-3 hours

i have a pic of my kk some where hang on i will go find it :hyper:

1st bay vortex and filter brush
2nd bay 18 brushes
3rd bay jap mat
4th bay flocor, bag of oyster shells, filter matting on to
5th bay flocor and added air and 2 bags of alfagrog

filter with its winter jacket

i also have a goldie pond just under 1000ltr it is filtered by a tetrapond pfxuv5000 pressurised and a 2400 kockney koi pump again i have the flow reduced to the filter to get the contact time
here the filter when it was first installed

both filters do a very good job both are easy to clean although the kk is bigger it is easier to clean then the tetra
pretty much any filter can be a tropical filter,
its marine filters where things start to get more complicated

The warmer the water is, the less oxygen it is able to hold and with the increased oxygen demand of fish at higher temperatures; warm water can quite easily become oxygen deficient.
tropical fish need 5mg/l.

ppm or mg/l = parts per million or milligrams per litre

there are one million mg in a litre of water, so one part per million is equal to one milligram per litre. an oxygen level might be described as 10mg/l, meaning that there are 10 milligrams of oxygen for every litre of water ( one litre = 1,000,000 milligrams). this might also be written as 10ppm.

Temperature (oC) . Maximum Oxygen Content (mg/litre)

10 ........................ 11.28
15 ........................ 10.07
20 ........................ 9.08
25 ........................ 8.24

hope this helps

yeah it works well very well im glad i went for it instead of the nexus to be honest

i had all that untill a week ago someone nicked it all while i was away for the weekend and they kicked the riased pond part in too the fish are ok though

i woupdnbt use breeze blocks for building a pond (depends on the size ) how ever ive heard breeze blocks can crack if they get water in side and freeze.

you would be best of using 7n concrete blocks abit heavier and you wont be able to kick it down after its been built :good:

which ever way he decides to go i hope we get to see some pond build piccies :hyper:
