Assasin Snails

Assassins will only breed if there is a male and a female, and even then the number of eggs laid is very very low, they arent bad at cutting down a snails population but they take 3 days to digest them and by then the snails have probably been at it anyway and laid more eggs! So you do need a few of them to control the population. if they do kill all of the snails you then have to feed them on meat based foods like shrimp pelets etc.

Fully grown ones were priced about £2.50-75 i think in my LFS.
Pretty cheap I think. so you could easily get 50p to £1 each.

You could say that if they go theres plenty more fish in the sea or in your case store!!

sorry to hijack but just wondering how messy are they? just seen a few snails in my 10g thats cycling and its got no fish in atm and nothing in my stock eats snails so was wondering if this could be an option?

They are not messy in the least and I barely ever see mine. They're at the back of the tank. All three of them stuck together. I have no idea what they are doing.lol

If you don't have any aquatic plants currently. you could transfer the filter to a bucket with the aquarium water allow it to continue cycling by dosing the bucket with ammonia as if it was an aquarium. Leave your aquarium with as much water as possible drained from it in the sun for a few days to completely dry out then fill up again and return the filter once cycled to the tank with a couple of assassins who will then dispose of any snail eggs that become rehydrated by the reintroduction of water but any adults are highly likely to be dead.

Sorry to but in but discus wormer does the trick too kills snails obviously then you will have the task to pick out all the dead carcases .
never tried doing it this way but it says on my discus wormer packet to remove any snails before applying as it may kill them .
so had to remove my nerites sulawesis before applying .

You then need to add fresh activated carbon to the filtration, once the treatment is complete before adding the snails again or else the copper will linger and kill the snails. The issue with copper treatments is the snails remain and rot causing ammonia to sky rocket.
