Yes, is the short answer.
If you are using live rock as your filter you obviously need a enough to do the job and you would think having loads would be good, but it isn't, it creates dead zones in your tank which create all sorts of problems
So the rule with live rock is work out how much you need using the calculator or asking on here and get approx that amount, a bit over is fine but a lot over is not
If you are thinking of using artificial rock in your tank without using any live rock for filtration you will need to have an external to do the job but you must still consider that it is possible to have too much and create those dead zones.
If you are considering mixing in a tank your size, then really imho you shouldn't
you can have a nice little tank with natural and good filtration for barely anything, why would you want to spoil the tank with artifical rock? In a large tank then I can understand the thinking
