Looking to get an Arowana been doing some research but wanted to know what size fish tank would be needed (minimum) until i would need to upgrade to a larger one and the most common fish to house the Arowana with??

Any Suggestions??

you need a BIIIIIIIG tank. Unless you have room for a 7x2x2 (may even need to be bigger) then you should not be looking to keep one.

Yh i have the room for one, is that the smallest even if i buy the arowana at about 6" long?? i was looking to but a smaller tank and then upgrade as the fish grows??

why would you do that? This means additional cost as you have to buy two tanks eventually.

With any fish you should only home them if you have the correct size tank for their adult size. If you place them in a smaller tank until they grow, there is a risk that you will stunt their growth and give them a early death.

^^ What if you get money problems and can't afford the upgrade too.

I used to think the same until i give it a good thought, i'd only suggest doing it if you're ready to part with/rehome the fish if needed.

I would suggest a 3 foot wide tank and 7 foot long minimum.

Arowana grow quick, only reason to keep a grow out is if he/she struggles to get food.

Also, a lot depends on which Arowana (max size) you plan to keep!

Ahh i see what you mean it would cost a fair bit probably goin to wait until i know exaclty what to do and have more experience as i have only just set up a tropical fish tank 2 months ago.

didnt know arowana grew to different max sizes whats are the smallest ones???

Thanks for all the feed back

There are different types of Arowana, most common is Silver, and they all grow to different max size...Around 2 foot minimum.

dont forget about the costs of feeding such a massive fish :S

Yh i think im goin to rethink getting one now and maby stick to smaller fish in the mean time.

Always wanted to own an Arowana, Or Pirahna and wil hopefully in the future when i have a HUGE!!!! tank :)

I've kept Arros before, one of my favourite fish! They are grumpy and beligerent, eat any fish fitting in their big mouths and will take a chunk of you given the chance (and it hurts! even when small!!).

I kept Silvers (hit upside of >90cm so 3ft+) and will tolerate other big cichlids and rays etc...

I also kept Pearl Arrowanas which are 10 x better looking and dont get quite so big <90cm but still 2-3ft of fish and are far more aggressive, wont tolerate much in the way of tank mates.

My3cm Pearl Arro hit 30cm within 9-10 months... growth rate is phenomenal...

Yeah, for arros your looking at a HUGE tank and a huge budget too. Hahaha

Seriously amazing fish but I'd go 8-10th long and 3-4 ft wide at least. Ideally 12x4x4 and bigger I guess. And with tanks that size you'll start running into weight issues too. (12x4x4 will be somewhere around 1100 uk gal and each uk gal is about 10lbs... So, 11,000lbs.... Wowza)

It would be a big project but I'll be doing one once I get to a bigger house.

For big fish like arowanas and red tail cats, you don't think 'tank', you think 'indoor pond'!
