Why are arowanas so expensive?

Does anyone know of any good website with lots of info?

My guess would be that they're expensive because they are an impressive fish. Not many other fish in the hobby have the same awe inspiring presence that arowanas do.

As for good places for info, why not start in the oddballs section of this forum? Lots of good info there :)

Not all aros are $$$. Silvers are by far the most abundant and cheapest, and max out at 3-4'.

Australians are a little more expensive, but affordable to the average person.

Africans are $$$, pretty rare.

Its the asian aros that are so damn expensive. Its because they are CITES protected and the only ones available are the farm bred ones.

BUT, generally aros are much more expensive than the average neon tetra.

You cant really expect to buy a 4' foot for the price of your 1" neon.

Obviously a larger aro would be more expensive.
A small silver a few inches long is like $10-20
a neon is like a couple bucks.

So your silver arowana costs just as much as a school of neons

Asian arowanas are extremely endangered in the wild, which is why they are regulated so tightly. All Asian arowanas available (legally) in the hobby must be microchipped, if I'm not mistaken.
