Are your...

I have three tanks in my living room. Only the u/g filter on my 2.5 gal hex tank makes a noise that I can hear over the sounds of my a/c. I never notice any while watching TV

ok cool thanks.

Just my mum is considering having a 4ft tank in our front room, possibly one of the ones on the big cabinets.

What you are referring to is 'White' noise.

This is background noise that can come from electrical equipment, road traffic, trains, planes, etc.
Because it is a constant noise your brain will stop recognising it after a while (to a certain extent). I have 2 x 30g tanks and a 15g tank in my living room and i hardly notice the noise anymore.

It's an interesting fact that a lot of UK nuclear power stations use a constant noise as a safety device rather than a siren or klaxon that only goes off when there's a problem. This is because if you work there full-time you shut out the constant 'white' noise but when it stops you pick up on it immediately.

(Why do i know these stupid facts? They only every come out when i'm drunk or on a forum ;) )

Of course this also depends a great deal on your equipment. I have two tanks, one in my living room and one in my dining room. The living room tank has a much louder filter than the one in the dining room, which is silent. The living room tank isn't so loud to bother me, but it is deffinitly noticable.

personally I think after a bit u get used to hearing the sound in the background ie:white noise

its not just NPS that use this a lot of big manufactures do this even though it costs them more money, it saves on the complaints.
