What is your opinion on the usefulness of UV filters in an aquarium? Do they help prevent disease, or just cost money to operate?

They do help prevent disease, but I think the greatest thing about them is they eliminate that nasty algae. If you don't have an algae problem, then I don't think it's worth the money.

I have one. I haven't had a fish death since I installed it. It keeps my plants growing nicely, eliminates algae and keeps my tank super clear. :)

They will only help with free floating algae which cause green water. The only way it kills anything is for it to pass though the filter. It won't help with the alae that grows on your plants, tank walls and sand. Unless you have a green water problem, I wouldn't spend the money for one. I do think CFC runs them all the time on at last one or two of his tanks.
