So a friend close to me bought some tanks that came with fish, which he didn't want. I said I would take them off his hands. Ot was a mixed lot of neon tetra and supposedly guppies, but two of these female are absolutely huge. I suspect they are actually a crossbreed, and therefore infertile. What do you guys think?

I have some very large females that have babies. It's hard to tell for size comparison. But I didn't even know that guppies and Molly's could crossbreed! Do you have any idea why their backs are so bent?

I have one that's bigger than these two but she has never had babies. In the bottom picture with Dumbo guppy... it has the big fins that remind me of Dumbo's ears... I'm really hoping that her next batch has him as the daddy :)

I didn't think Mollies and guppies could cross breed. So, these are just large guppies.
I wasn't sure, since there have been reports of them cross breeding, but very rarely. They are larger than most adult mollies I have seen. About 3 inches.

They are just oversized guppies (XL). What makes you think they might be infertile?
Oversized specimens tend to bend at some point. That's normal. Especially when such females had large batches of fry. But also because of old age.
Mollies and guppies are able to crossbreed. Their sexual organs are compatible. Overhere a link about such hybrids: http://emeraldking-aquatics.com/livebearer6

What makes you think they might be infertile?
I had thought that most hybrid species were infertile. Since they are just giant guppies, I suppose I can look forward to lots of fry in the future. Not sure if I can be too excited about that, considering the number of live bearers I have been given in the last couple of days.

Not all hybrids are infertile. It depends more on how close or how far both species are related that the fertility will decrease or not or goes to an infertile state.

Ahh! I feel like I learn something new every day with this hobby. I rather like my large females. Like school buses among smart cars.

Hope you get a notification for this! :D

Miss seeing you around the forum! Did these guppies wind up producing a load of fry? Sorry for bumping old thread, I was hunting for an old thread for linkable info then happened to spot this, wanted to bump it :D
