Hey, I'm going to start a new 30g tank with lots of hiding places avaliable. I was thinking of adding carnivorous fish. I was thinking of adding either a red tail shark or rainbow shark, 2 killifish and a crowntail betta. Would those fish go well together? Also does anyone recommend any catfish that can live in this tank?

This tank is too small for either "shark," and they should never be combined anyway. The Crowntail Betta is best on its own, and it could do well in a smaller tank. The killifish depend upon the species. Catfish, yes, without the sharks, and then depending upon substrate material (some need sand).

It will most likely be sand. So would the killifish be fine either a catfish or a shark?

What sort of Killifish are you thinking of? And what kind of Catfish?

I wouldnt add any of the shark types (like red tail or rainbow) but there may be some other small loach species like Dwarf Chains that tick the same box?

There are dozens of species of killifish, each having various requirements respecting water parameters, numbers of the species, compatibility, hardscape needs, and so forth. The intended species will help members answer this.

The shark as I said is not suited to this small a tank. The Red Tail reaches five inches, and the Rainbow six inches. They are territorial, the Red Tail much more so than the Rainbow. But either requires a 4-foot (120 cm) length tank.

Yh I think the killifish and the catfish should be fine. Not sure about the shark though

I dont think anyone with enough common sense would add a catfish species that can grow that huge.
I'm clearly being hyperbolic... I'm just saying that catfish are an incredibly vast group, it's not limited to two or three species so it's important to ask/include the species they're looking for, because not all will be suitable for that kind of tank.

One would think/hope so, but...we have had more than one thread in the past couple of years where a member has asked about a fish they just bought, and it has turned out to be a little catfish in their 10g tank, which will grow into a 2 or 3 foot fish. The Red Tail Catfish (Phractocephalus hemioliopterus) was the species in one if not two of these threads, and this fish can attain 3.5 to 4.5 feet (1.1 to 1.4 metres). Stores don't always know much about the fish they sell.
