For those who have kept male and female Bettas (separately, not to breed) have you noticed any personality differences? Do people mostly keep males because of their more spectacular appearance or are their personalities more winning as well? I happen to think the females are adorable and am contemplating getting one as our next fish but am wondering what they're like.

Other than fins, I have found female Bettas to be just as cheeky, aggressive, playful, and down right manipulative when it comes to begging for food as the males, I even had a female who built bubble nests.

I've kept both and haven't noticed any difference in personalities. They all kind of have their own personalities. :) Males are often kept more just because of their looks and long fins.

I've always been partial to male bettas due to their looks over females most are also bigger and chunkier than females, though you can get quite stunning longer finned females now as well. I just saw some lovely dumbo females in my lfs today, was tempted but just have no space atm, temperament wise they are much the same though I do find the males more likely to keep their colour, females stress stripe easily and also love the bubble nesting which are only occasionally produced by females.

Thanks, All! I appreciate your thoughts.

I forgot to mention I have a female with very long fins. For the longest time I though she was actually a he. :p

I had a female beta and she seemed much more acrobatic in her tank, I'm guessing because she doesn't have the hindrance of long fins. She loved the chase anything that wiggled (bubbles included) and was quite fun. I've had a couple male bettas be active but she was by far the most acrobatic active betta.

I had to lower the water level in my Crown tail's tank, little booger thinks that the water that condenses on the glass top is food or something and that its fun to jump trying to get them.
