Title says it all really! I want a larger centre piece that I could keep in my freshwater community tank. Are there any Cichlids that don't grow too big (5 inches) or aggressive? I have medium sized tetra, an angelfish, corys etc.

Suggestions please!

Thanks,

Steve

rams usually are the selection for someone wanting a cichlid fish for a community tank, but there is another option. Keyholes will get bigger than rams (I dont think rams even get to 3, maybe 2" at most) with keyholes I believe getting to 4 or 5". They are very peaceful and would be a nice addition to your community (if you can find them, I've never seen one in an lfs, but maybe thats just my area)

agreed with ox54.....we always have keyholes in the south of england :shout:
you angel fish is a cichlid and is a beautiful centre peice by its self :good:

Am I the only one who things angelfish are ugly?

Nope, I don't really find them appealing myself, but I usually just keep it in as to not rain on someone else's parade. If they like them, then they can get them. And apparently there are a lot of people out there that like angels as they cover a good majority of the posts here on TFF and usually a ton of them for sale at the lfs. To each his own right?

i like all fish,,,you should see my array
but who can say these are ugly

i like different fish with diff types of personality
its similar iam not really drawn to old world cichlids<dont see them having personality at all<maybe fronts are different,,but south/central american are great cichlids

I love angels, unfortunately I never had much luck with them though. I used to keep Keyholes with my tropicals, very cute fish.

yeah ive got a big decision to make in the next few days...
either go with a africano cichlid set up + a smallmarine tank for two clowns

or

go with a full out planted auqarium, with a few shoals and a few bigger fish....

(tank is 100 gal that im planning it for) :p

I would say go for the big tank as well as I'm not a fan of old worlds either. Have the 100G set-up with plants, shoals of smaller fish and a couple keyholes would look beautiful :good:

if you can do this :good:

is it going to cost abit?, (bar the tank)

depending on what type of plants you use and whether you do a DIY CO2 or a commercially available CO2, this will be the decently expensive. Stocking should be relatively cheap unless you search out some rare fish. Lighting will be the most important and expensive depending on what plants you use and how much light they need. If it's a 100G tall as well, it will get even more expensive because the taller the tank, the more powerful lights you need to penetrate more depth of water.
