yesterday, i went to my LFS and purchased 7 rummynose tetra and i golden ram cichlid they have both settled in fine but today morning i noticed that occasionally the rummynose tetra are pecking at the ram, there is no visible damage to the ram.Is this behaviour usual?

Also its a 20 gallon tank so i was wondering could i fit in a few more rams?

What's the NH3/NO2/NO3 levels in the tank.

If you don't have liquid test kit, that's probably your problem and you should keep doing 80% WC's until you get one.

I got my water tested at the LFC and it was fine, but i am wondering whythe tetras are going for the ram

"fine" means absolutely nothing.  Whenever you have it tested for you, ask for the SPECIFIC information, or else its meaningless.

They're supposed to be a very peaceful species of fish, but even the most passive fish will become irate when the water is poisonous. It sounds like the tank might not be cycled (or a mini cycle, or the filter just couldn't catch up) since you added pretty much your entire tank's stocking in one day.

Well, with those rummy nose and the rams, I'm thinking you are at the limit stocking, maybe I'm wrong.
Also in such a small tank it's normal for tetras to nip at other species as they most likely always see the ram.
Anything that can break the line of sight will be a good addition to your tank, if it's not already the case.
Also, tetras really love plants, as for rams, I'm not quite sure.

In my experience rummynose are very mischievous when it comes to rams and apistos that are not in good health. If the rummynose is picking at the poop hole it's because the ram has an infection or worm of some type.

Could throw in another ram and a tetra at the one inch rule, though I don't suspect there is too much swimming room in a 20g anyway.

Yeah, rummy nose should be kept in MINIMUM 24 inches long, and that's bare minimum.
Seeing them swim in my 36 long makes me think They be even better in 48.

In my experience Rummynose Tetras are very peaceful. I've kept them with German Blue Rams (one male and one female) and haven't had any problems with them. It was rather the rams that would chase the rummies away during mating and protecting the eggs.
Do you have plants and caves for the ram to hide in? Is this Golden Ram a Bolivian Ram, which would be better in a larger tank (29 gallon) or is it the Golden Dwarf Acara?

There is caves and spots to hide, i am sure that it is a gold variety of german rams, however things seem to be normal i have not noticed any aggression over the past 8 hours, the ram is doing what it should be
