Hi

dont know if this should be in biggners questions but anyway,

My LFS the live plant prices are a rip off its £3,49 for a small one and £14,99 for a big one but there not that big and the small ones are only just growing.i want a planted tank but i dont have the money.is it a rip off where you live?

shop = pets at home ,( The big brand with the green logo)
place = staffordshire , uttoxoter

The bit below does not have to be read just info on my fishtank.

The pic in my signature is my only tank the one in my bedroom im 14
so dont have my own house, lol, it used to look like that I will try and
get a pic for you tonight. and update it.:fun:It looks good at the minute
I have problems with changing it around. I have 3 fake plants and 2 real ones growing nicely. :D

Dimenshions of my tank.

60 long = 24" inch
30 cm wide = 12" inch
30 cm tall = 12" inch

Well, I'm not too familiar with pounds, but here price depends on where you go. There's one place that's pretty cheap (about $2-$3 Australian), but they have less of a range. Where I go can get more expensive (about $3-$15), but there's a huge range, you get a *bunch* of the plant rather than just one plant, and the more expensive ones are less common around here.

Planted tanks do look awesome, though your tank definitely looks great already. If you really want live plants, maybe you could add a one every now & then when you have some "spare" cash (lol, when is cash ever spare??), & slowly replace some of the plastic ones with real ones - that's how I did it.

MY LFS has really good prices on Plants.

All Plants no matter what they are 75p a each.

Plants like Amazon sword and Hygrophila cost me £2.59 or £2.99 Can't quite remember. The Amazon sword is quite large and I always get cuttings from it. So i'd say I pay a fair price. But Elodea is also the same price  I imagine of you have a large Tank it would be very expensive.

Yea, plants where I shop are outrageous. Depending on the plant species, they range from 4-5 dollars. I never could keep them though - they always died.

So, I stopped buying plants, and went to Walmart and bought plant bulbs instead. I planted them in my tank along with a few plant tabs, and they have grown like weeds! I have some type of lily, and some other plant in there. They have sprouts several leaves, and have REALLY long shoots going up to the surface of the water. The lily has huge lily pads at the surfac, and the other plants produced these strange looking curly things that are supposed to flower, but they haven't yet. Buying bulbs instead of leafy plants has been a good experience for me :)

At pah they are, but there is a fish shop in a garden centre about 45 minutes away from me, and they sell their plants for like 15p I think was the cheapest, I spent about £10 on 4 fish and some plants, and the fish were like a bit cheaper too. So it worked out at about 6 plants for £2.

I've been looking for Jave fern all over, the only person I know selling them locally sells them for an equivalent of about $8, which for me is a rather pricey considering how cheap aquarium stuff are here (amazon swords can be bought at $0.10) AND considering that the java fern are sold for less than half the price in some US sites and it's a native plant here in the Philippines. I guess nobody here bothers harvesting them in the wild or what.

yes!! my lfs has riducouls plant prices! $30 for java fern!

$30!?! That's crazy! You can buy several anubias plants for that price, and those ain't supposed to be cheap, right? I found a US online site that sells lots of plants, fishes, shrimps and snails, the java fern was about $2+, and shipping to US was reasonable, but couldn't order internationally as the plant certification thing required by the US govt for export was prohibitive, it's $150.

at work we are probable over priced it's £2.95 for potted plants what ever size or £1.95 for bunched plants which are in bunches of 5, cabomba, elodea densa and vallis.

4 for £10
3 for £5

there good plants and in the right conditions they do great.
