Hi

I have 3 ghose knife fish in a tank with pangasius catfish and a marbled garfish. Since the knifefish have been introduced to the tank I get an electric shock whenever i put my hand in the water.

Can you tell me if these fish are electric, if so what can I do about this as i have a phobia about electricity.

Thanks

T

Yes, black ghost knives are electric fish. As to what you can do to stop them from zapping you, nothing. Electric fish are electiric fish. But i never knew they were powerful enough to give an electric shock to a human.

Whatever you think you feel is NOT caused by a knifefish...
check your heaters for a short...

PLEASE do NOT give out info on fish you know NOTHING about!

Knifefish can NOT shock anyone...NOT even another fish!

They use electrical impulses to find food and navigate but thery are not powerful enough to shock you -Anne

Hey, i did say i never knew they could shock a person. I have only read on them on the internet, none of them mentioned shocking people. I did considerable research on them as i once considered getting one. So dont jump down my neck thinking i know nothing.

I have also read that they have zapped other fish. It may be wrong, i dont know. SORRY!

I am jumping down your throat...
I don't know and don't care what you researched...
You just gave total trash as advice...

You said in one breath you didn't know they could shock a person...and in the same breath said, there is nothing you can do from stopping them.

You made it sound as if this person was getting zapped from his fish!
You don't KNOW BGK...or you would have said

The electrical organ is very weak and is used only to locate food. There is NO way they can zap a human or another fish!

Instead you allowed this person to believe you knew fact...

bad bad bad....

If you do not have experience owning a fish LONG term...then you have either no biz giving advice or you should preface it by saying

I HAVE NO PERSONAL KNOWLEDGE...but I have read a bit..perhaps I'm wrong,do some research or wait for someone with experience to answer.

Like mentioned above, knifefish are do generate a small amount of electricity to create a weak electircal field which allows them to find food and navigate around the tank. Knifefish don't generate enough electricity to harm any other animal or person. Check all electrical appliances in the tank in case of any faults.

How big is the tank your keeping them in? it must be quite large to hold 3 knifefish

thanks for your help, Ive turned all electrics off and i got no shock, turn them back on and ZAP! so I guess its down to process of elimination.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction, never would of thought of that.

Cheers

yvw!

Good luck figuring it out! I'm sure your fish will be much happier once that zap is eliminated :)

My tank size is 6 x 2 x 2 foot, I also have a 8 x 2 x 2 tank waiting for stand to be delivered.

Checking electricals now.

Thanks

Ok lets calm down, I am sure Phantom Thief was merely trying to help by stating that they are electical fish, which is correct. The second part of his post to me does not seem advisery, but more like a question which in turn you (BlueIce) have answered. If you feel someone has given the wrong information simply post the correct information in your post and it will be backed up, Phantom Thief now knows that they cannot generate a strong enough electric field to shock humans and the topic starter now knows the anwers to the question she posted, that it is not the Knife Fish so lets leave it there. :)
