are bettas hardy or not??

Well I have to agree....I do try and take care of my fish but is just a fish. I am always amazed on how much people put human emotions into animals. In the wildlife field I have heard it called the "Disney Syndrome". I wonder if city people really do think that Bambi and Thumper play together in the forest?? I am not one for cruelty at all but I also don't have a problem feeding a betta, guppy, or any other fish to my Oscar. I mean nature is not nice and most people that I have met don't get the this simple point....Just because you don't see it doesn't mean it doesn't happen. Anyways this was NOT directed any individual so please don't take personal offense.

I personally wouldn't want a piscavore but your attitude doesn't shock me in the least. Of all the deaths a fish could have, munch, munch, gulp is probably one of the easier ones, and of course it is all part of the "cycle of life" (yeauch - that's Disney too, isn't it? ).

I don't consider that to be cruel, but I do think its cruel to keep fish in over-crowded tanks with poor water quality.

I couldn't agree more, bettas are MUCH happier in smaller tanks alone then they are stuffed in a 10 with about a dozen tankmates, with barely a gallon of water to call his own  , I'm sure that's a recipe for disaster :S

LOL,Inchworm   "at least I haven't adopted any bloodworms"   ,not yet anyway, huh?

I do understand the circle of life as it was put....here I am drooling over a Red Devil, which means I'll have to start keeping feeders on hand  ,BUT they will be there to feed MY fish    ,and we also feed our turtle guppies :/ -_-

Sondan....   , I saw a deer and a rabbit that were the best of friends on Animal Planet once, they weren't forced together either, they would wander up in this guys backyard daily and finally he caught them on tape ;)

 @ Wuv !!!! I agree with you guys...I guess I have met people who do not understand the difference between cruel and nature. To me using one fish to feed another is not cruel but nature. But keeping 20 fish in a 5 gallon is also not cruel to me...(not the smartest thing) but not cruel. I mean in the wild these 20 fish would be FREE....to be eaten, search for their own food (and starve if they didn't find any), to catch a disease and not have the "Fish Doctor" to fix it, or worse. I just think that even living in a cramped house would be better then living free in a war zone. As long as the fish have a remotely clean tank then that is fine with me....to me IT IS better then being in the wild.

P.S. I do enjoy these little debates with you all. :D

For humans there are institutions that provide living conditions similar to what you prefer as a life style for fish. They are called prisons and mental hospitals. :p
