The aqueon power filter 40 is what I'm working with for my new aquarium. (Yeah, I bought an aquarium kit - I'm lame)

I don't have any problems with it other than the fact that it's very loud. Not the filter itself but the water its dispensing splashes pretty loudly running into the water in the tank . When I pull the cover off, though, and take out a little blue plastic grid (the manual calls its the "biological grid"), the water flows nice and quite right into the tank. As far as I can tell, this "biological grid" is just a piece of plastic with some holes it in that creates ripples and bubbles in the water as it reenters the tank rather than just a steady smooth stream. I'm not expert, but it doesn't seem necessary, especially since I have an air stone in the tank already just in case.

Does this sound like anything I need? Normally, I just take it out when it's keeping me up at night and then put it back when I wake up in the morning.

I think it should be alright to take it out. Might aid in a surface for bacteria to grow on but as long as there is foam in the filter I wouldn't worry about it.

Try increasing water level too if you do not like the splashing noise.

yeah I have one of those filters and it is very loud with that in it
