Is anyone using an Aqueon filter? I have two set up on cycling tanks and was wondering how long they take to cycle compared to filters with sponges, etc.

OK, I think this post might be going in a differant direction. These guys are now starting to get a little loud  Thought the submerged pump was supposed to run quieter? Any suggestions for replacement if my ear plugs get uncomfortable or they shut up? One,s on a 10gal and other 16gal.

Thanks

I have an aqueon power filter....never had any problems. Only sound it makes is trickling water. Make sure nothings clogging it. Also my tank took about two months to cycle...so there not fast, but when your tank is cycled you can see bacteria growing on the inside of the filter.

Thanks for the reply. :) I have recently cycled one tank and have one cycling. The noise factor pretty much went away after a good cleaning, so noise not much of an issue. Do you leave the charcoal filter in all the time? Since it only works for about a week, I was considering taking it out and using a retrofit sponge to try and colonize some bacteria for my next tank. I plan on using 2 Aqua Clear 70 for a 55gal. and want to use a sponge or other media from that filter in my aqueon. Just haven't had time to check it out.

I just leave the filter in it. Of course its not my only filter: i've got a small fluval sponge filter. The filter's don't need to be replaced but once like every two months I think. I would just give it a quick rinse and put it back in that way you wont lose all the bacteria.

I usually just knock them arourd in waste tank water when the water in the filter starts over flowing. I'm gonna try loading in a media pack from the Aqua Clear 70 to see if it works :sly: :look:

I've got several Aqueon filters. They are good filters but not real quiet. Water level seems to have an impact. The higher the quieter. Rather than use the expensive Aqueon filters I use a box knife to strip the floss from the plastic frame. Then I cut some bulk filter floss slightly larger than the frame and wrap it around the frame and slide it in. The bulk floss cleans easily, just dunk in some tank water from a water change and squeeze. A couple of dunks and you can use it again. (I am cheap, ain't I? ) Another cool thing about the filter floss. I've used it successfully to seed new filters without having to recycle the old filter.

I don't use charcoal unless I need to remove a treatment from the water. In that case, I just pore some in a nylon sock and stick it in the filter.

If you want a quiet HOB, try Aquaclear. I picked up some very used ones free. Nice filters, good flow and very quiet.

Hey kcharley. I'm gonna do the same thing w/ my Aqueon filters. In my next tank, I'm already planning on using Aqua Clear. I like the ability to use seperate media any way I want to. The Aqueons are running fine - less noise after I put some cabinet door bumps between the filter and tank side. Most of the noise was coming from there.
