Aquarium water

Well, thats the thing, Theres no ammonia but there alot of nitirites. Also, I wasn't assuming the water is what made me sick, i was just thinking if that had something to do with it.

OK, maybe I am not as easily scared or something here, but unless there is some rampant mutant disease in your tank, there is nothing a healthy immune system should not be able to take care of in there. As far as I know (and please correct me if you know something else), the only disease that can jump the fish-human barrier is tuberculosis (TB) and even then, the TB that the fish gets is not the really dangerous one to us. People, there is bacteria on everything, everywhere: fishtank, restroom, kitchen, your food.

Now, if you have a compromised immune system (like you have AIDS) or something like that, there are precautions that should be taken. A google search comes up with several pages that talk about it. I don't think it would be wise to swallow a big chunk of anything...

But a little fish water? It really, really should not cause anything.

I take it you've never swallowed fish water? It can and does make you sick, even without a compromised immune system. If it's so safe to drink, why not take a gulp of it and find out for yourself? :)

I have to suck on mine too, but always manage to move it away from my mouth and into the bucket before it gets too close. Just keep an eye on the water moving through the tube and when it's about a finger length away from your mouth, place your thumb on the hole and put it into the container.

Works for me :D , besides, I don't think I would enjoy having fish poo and pee in my mouth

It's recromended you don't start the suction by sucking with your mouth. You could get sick, on most ocasions.

What if you are swimming in lake with fish and you swallow water? I dont see how swallowing water from a clean fish tank would hurt you :dunno:

No matter how clean a tank is, it will still have poo in it?

I certainly wouldnt want to drink tank water...

A lake is much, much, much larger than an aquarium and therefore is much less concentrated with it's waste. There is also an abundant self-regulating cycle of life that keeps wastes down and is more stable than an aquarium otherwise we wouldn't need to do it ourselves every few days or weeks. Besides, it's still not recommended to drink lake water you don't know is safe. :)

Well I know that, I dont go around drinking lake water or tank water for that matter

Teelie, I have always started siphons with my mouth... and yes, once in a while I've gotten distracted and gotten a mouthful. Nothing happened.

In the great list of things to worry about here, worrying about fish water hurting you is very, very low on my list. I'm going to stick by my comments earlier that there is very little in a healthy tank that would cause sickness in humans. I am not saying it is not a good idea to practice good hygiene after having your hands in the tank (I usually wash my hands), and I would not intentionally take a mouthful. But at the same time, I would not be worried about getting sick if I did.

There is only a few fish diseases that cross the human-fish barrier! If you've read some of the posts from our members from England, they have high (40+ ppm) nitrates in their drinking water. Fish waste gets broken down on a smaller scale but not unlike what water treatment centers do with the human sewer system. What is in there that you are all so afraid of?!?

Look at this page, for example which talks about if something can enter the air from the tank. In particular, look at the author's "edited answer and discussion" point 1. There has to be something in there, in the first place that can cause sickness. This is exactly like the ich myths out there. If you do not have the ich organism is your water, it does not matter how much stress you subject your fish too, they will not get ich. In the same way, unless there is something dangerous in your tank water, you can drink, bathe, wash in it as much as you want, and you will not spontaneously get sick! Something has to cause it. And, if you are keeping your fishtank healthy, the chances of having one of the dangerous things in there is pretty darn remote.

Teelie, just because I don't think that I would be sick if I drank some tank water doesn't mean I will or want to. I also think I could probably drive 120 miles per hour on the highway reasonably safely, but I'm not going to. I also think I could probably electrically wire a circuit box without cutting the power (the pro electricians usually do) but I guarantee I'm not going to.

Yeah, don't drink toilet water either. That's yucky.

The first time I used a gravel siphon the same thing happened to me. I rinsed my mouth out because the taste was horrible. But I didn't get sick.

I wasn't referring to fish diseases spreading to humans only, there are also other things like bacterial, parasites and various microbes which can harm a person in an aquarium. I never said only fish diseases and it's no myth. Plenty of people here can attest to getting sick from the water. Like I said, the most you usually get is stomach flu kind of illness but more often it's the sore throat or a slight naseuous feeling that will occur. There's the rare cases like Ed4567 pointed out where you get a much worse sickness but I never said it was common.

Keep a bottle of whiskey near the tank, take a good slug off the bottle if you get fish water in your mouth.

Tolak

Suck on the siphon, take a swig. Suck on the siphon again, take another swig. Make a game of it. :D
