Aquarium Newby, Advice Appreciated

HI EVERYONE,  I've "taken the plunge" & ordering a fish tank - AQUAEL 60.  Does anyone else have an Aquael tank?  Mine will be the basic kit, but I wondered if you can buy equipment to convert a tank to tropical fish conditions?
I thought it may be just a case of buying a heater & thermometer?
 
Any tips would be greatly appreciated

I don't have one of their tanks, but yeah a heater (100w) and a thermometer is fine.

Not familiar with this tank so I've googled it and it should come with a filter, light and heater as a kit. As TLM said you will need a thermometer to check the actual water temp and also be able to spot if anything goes wrong with the heater. Don't get one of those stick-on strip ones as they aren't very accurate at all. Better with a digital or even a glass one. I have both as double check but one should be sufficient and they are cheap enough on eBay or similar.
What fish are you hoping to get? Will you be fishless cycling when you get your tank? Don't rely on the bacterial starter stuff you get with the tank - it will not work as they suggest. If you aren't familiar with fishless cycling, have a look at the article linked at the end of my signature.

I do not have an AQUAEL 60 tank, however I have seen them in LFS, they are basic starter kits and its fine for a new fish keeper to begin with and a 54 litre is a decent sized tank to start with.
As time goes on, you probably will upgrade some of the equipment.
 
And as the other have asked, Fishless cycle, this would be highly recommended you do this before you buy any fish and inverts.
 
If you do want to do fishless cycle, you will need at least two things, a freshwater testing kit, preferably a liquid based kit, such as API FW Master Test Kit.

And you will also need some ammonia for dsing the tank during the fishless cycle

Lastly, you will probably have a bottle dechlorinator or tap safe stuff with your starter kit, if not , then you'll also need to purchase some for when you do water changes to keep the water safe for your fish (they don't like chlorine and other metals thats comes in tap water)

i will just add......do not add too many fish at once or the ammonia levels can spike and they will die quickly. just add a fer every so many days or weeks to let the filter cope with the waste levels from the fish. goodluck.

If bubbling follows and successfully completed a Fishless Cycle, using this forums article, he can fully stock his tank in one go really.

The bacterias can process 3ppm ammonia at that point of completion and really, a fully stocked tank rarely gives anything near or above 3ppm ammonia. So therefore the bacteria should cope fairly well.

If for some reason he cannot get tank stocking for a period of time, can add 1ppm ammonia as a 'snack' dose every few days to keep bacteria active.
