Anyone know if you can buy a separate aquarium lid/hood with lights? The set up on my second hand tank is poor so looking to replace.

Would you consider an ipen topped aquarium? If so you can buy some cracking clip on luminaires.

You can cover with glass and get a clip on light or hang one from the wall or ceiling above the tank. It can look very modern and stylish when done right.

Never thought of that!! Any websites you can refer me to?

You don't need anything special. Have a look on eBay or elsewhere online for clip on/hanging lights and see what takes your fancy. You dont necessarily even need aquarium lights since the lid should mean they're not exposed to moisture or condensation. For the lid you just need some glass or acrylic cut to an appropriate size with holes for filter and heater leads and pipes. If you've got a glazier near you it might be a good place to enquire as they should already have the equipment needed to cut such materials.

My local glazing company cut a piece for me for one of my small tanks.
If your tank isn't a big one it's often very cheap as they do it from any discard pieces.
I recently got a clip on light from eBay, again you may get a bargain depending what size your tank is

Ok so looked at some clip on lights and Arcadia seems to be a brand that keeps I popping up. My tank is 31 inches wide but these lights are about half that length. Would the light be evenly distributed and does anyone have any experience of this brand of lighting? Are clip on lights just used for small aquariums and nanos?

Try searching for overhead lights rather than clip ons as they should be longer
