Just a quick post to see if anyone here has experience with either of the following aquarium kits (and what you think of them):

Fluval Duo 800 Deep,
Fluval Duo 1000 Deep,
Juwel Rio 125.

This is the shortlist - at last - of potential aquaria. Remembering that this would be my first aquarium what do you think? I will be keeping a relatively light stock of freshwater tropical fish and - hopefully - growing live plants as well.

Thanks in advance for any replies,
Ian.

[Not sure whether this should be in equipment section - but then again I am a beginner]

welcome to fish keeping :) I have not used either of those aquariums for I am in the US but they both sound good and I know a lot of the users here have the juwel tanks. You are looking at decent sizes too, a lot of newbies start with tiny tanks thinking it will be easier when in reality the upkeep in a smaller tank is just as bad, and you have more drastic fluxtuations in water conditions.

Make sure you read up on cycling the aquarium, before getting any fish.

Good luck hope you get replys soon from someone who has used those tanks.

all are good as each other
they all come with lights and fitration.
Juwel comes with heater too, not sure if the fluvals do or not.

just a note on the lighting, whatever tank you go for.
they will suppy it with the most basic of lights and they will proberbly not be ideal for good plant growth, so you may wish to buy better tubes from the start.

"all are as good as each other"

Thanks, that's just what I was trying to find out.

I think I'll take your advice on the bulbs, no point using poor quality lighting.

As regards cycling, I'll be doing fishless cycling which I've read loads about, both here and in my books.

Maidenhead Aquatics has some good deals on tanks ---> http://www.fishkeeper.co.uk/we/specials.asp

I have a Fluval Duo 800 and it is a very nice tank, if i'd seen those maidenhead aquatics prices i'd of purchased the fluval duo 1000. They come with a double light canopy, internal filter and a tronic heater. I also use an eheim external filter as well though.

I have planted tank and everything is growing very well with the original lighting, i've also injected cylinder co2 so that is helping.

weeps at those prices :-(

ADelphi,

Thanks for the post. I would have liked to go for the Fluval Duo 1000, but it'd be a very tight fit for the available space. The prices you linked to are good, but I've seen similar prices locally - I think the Duo 800 Deep is £180 including cabinet at my local dealer.

I think it's the 800 I'll go for. Wish I could go a bit bigger to fit a red-tailed black shark in, but there will be other tanks I'm sure.

Hi, Ive got the 800,I love it yo u get Fluval3Plus Filter 150 Watt Heater and other bits and bobs.Mine has been set up Two weeks now.I bought a collection of plants from Greenline, and most of them are growing well(bought some of their plant fertiliser as well, seems very good). The lighting is two tubes and seems totaly addiquit.
Iam doing a fishless cycle at the moment And it seems to be going in the right direction.Cant wait to get some fish.Wellcome to the Board, from one Newbie to another. :hi:

Ian, you are a rare person that does their research before even buying a tank. I know I was clueless when I bought one for my wife for Christmas. Fortunately, I found this forum shortly after to help me through my problems. After you get the tank, continue to research the fish too before you buy them. Good luck & welcome to the forum.

:hi:

Edit: Welcome to you too Silverlady. :hi:

I can't help myself. I spend far too much time researching my various interests. It seems to be extremely important in fishkeeping. Especially because fishes lives are concerned.

I think I'll look into buying a selection of plants from the company who adertise in PFK - forgot the name.

I think I've done about enough pre-purchase research now. Still got loads to do before I buy any fish though.
