Aquarium canopy build

Hello I am planning on build a canopy for my 55 gallon with wood, but i have a problem I dont have a clue what wood I can use for it and if it need to be treated.
It will be painted back once finished just hope someone can help we with what wood can be use.

A lot of people use pine and either paint or varnish it.

Most cheap hoods and stands sold in shops are made from chipboard/ particle board. However this stuff swells up and falls apart when it gets wet or in humid environments.

Not only what Colin said, but it weighs a ton and is not as strong for the weight of it.
