but so what if it still works after six months my ac works after a year and I know of much much longer hear 10+years, but the filter you bought is more expensive less eficient and less powerful than a competeing ac
i'm guessing that you were talking to me here...

i am just reporting on my experience, and since i've only been fishkeeping for that long, so that's all i can comment on

gale noted problems with hers after only a few months, so i wanted to share my experience

i think the AC was maybe $1-2 cheaper at big al's (when i bought the 2nd one), so i decided to stay with the brand that was already working well for me

I don't really like the aqua clears they always leak or the motor would cease I prefer marinlands line of emperor and pengiun bio-wheels filtration plus I dont like foam for a mechanical filter i prefer filter floss but thats just me and on tanks bigger than 100 gallons I really don't prefer box filters that big I would rather use a wet dry or canister filter i just think that box filter are use less on a tank of that size. thats just me. but i do like there line of powerheads. :D

I was just wondering why your Aquaclears leak all the time? I've never had mine leak. As long as you maintain them they shouldn't leak.

sorry newfishie never meant to sound hostile just trying to be logical up around here theres at least a 10 dollar price difference and up to 50 dollars I believe. And cometcattle tank location and filter media will affect the junk your pulling out of the tank but ac has more potential with the higher flow rate, maybe add some filter floss to the ac

FWIW I don't deny that penguin and other marineland filters are good quality, and that there will always be some that have problems. My problem is with Marineland's support/customer service. It seems to be nonexistant so that's why I'm going to switch. I'm disappointed because I really do like my penguins...when they're working properly.

While I've never has a problem with ACs leaking, I do have a situation where they lean backward from the tank and allow the water passing through them to spill out onto the floor.

When this happens, it's easy to fix by simply folding a washcloth and placing it between the body of the filter and the tank. This levels out the water in the chamber and solves the whole problem. :D

I could see that happening, but mine has a plastic level tab on the back to hold it up level. I know my mini model didn't have it, but it was an older model. What I did with the mini is put a big plastic suction cup on the filter so it would be level.

How can anything more expensive less efficient more complicated be justified? buying anything else just seems silly
Hi vantgE :)

That's a very good question! I agree with you.

Add to it the fact that there is a big chamber inside the AquaClear that you can fill with filter floss to increase its biological filtration capability, I don't know why anyone would want any other HOB filter.

The best price (US) that I found for a Aqua Clear 500/110 is $34.99 at PetSmart.

$34.99???? If only they were still that price! :hyper:
