Hi, been running an AquaOne 850 for a while. Made a few mods on the canopy filter mechanics that may interest owners or prospective buyers. Firstly took out the expensive to replace carbon filter panels for later use. Put in thicker foam media and increased the pitiful amount of supplied "noodles". Also added a thick wad of that fine white media from the pond section. Works great for me. Now then, the best tip I can offer is cut a piece of coarse media slightly larger than the chamber where the water returns into the tank. If you then push it down into place over the hole it kills the "Venturie Action" and ,hey presto, an almost silent tank. Also a little extra bacteria home. You must use coarse as you must not restrict the return flow. Of course, you may just like the sound of a waterfall in which case ignore my ramblings!

Ive been considering buying the Aqua One 980....

My only concern being do you think I would be able to run my external Eheim 2026 alongside the built in filter, the hood on the Aquaones look as though you cant mod them much?

i have the 980 and this is a very interesting read i may or may not take it up but will certainly look into it

Hi, I think the AquaOne tanks are great. The hood filter system works well for me and easy to experiment with different media types etc. Probably a little difficult to extract the power head for major cleaning as hood is heavy. Also I have the Juwel, foam rock background to which I had to cut out a section to accomadate the power head. I fixed my heater at the water return end which has no exit for the wire so I brought the wire up through the overflow channel and drilled a hole out the back (fitting a water proof gland). For some strange reason the leaflet says fill with water to just 80% capacity. I'm guessing that is for dislacement of rocks etc. I have seen a few photo's on TFF of Aquaone tanks wiith the water line well below the hood which is unsightly! With regard to adding your external filter, with a little working out could be done. You would have some major filtration then! :hey:

my ar980 is full to the bridge across the middle at the top

this stops my floating plants from colonating the whole tank

as for the filter well i have 40 fish and all my readings are zero so am very pleased

apart from adding a few more noodles i am thinking of buying some activated carbon and instead of replacing the 5c cartridge every 6 weeks or so just replacing the carbon by taking off the wool from the tops of the cartridges adding new carbon and putting a new wool filter over the top as this works out a lot cheaper than £6 or £7 a time

yes, those AquaOne peole would just love to spend your money! Many cheaper media alternatives out there and the canopy system gives you plenty of scope. My 850 is full to the brim too

how crazy am i ive bought a brand new aqua one 620 and its gonna be marine :fun:
Don't know squat 'bout marine but I guess the filtration is different. nothing like doing research :hey:

yerp 4 months of solid reaserching and learning about the filtration, the ocean, ocean chemistry, salinty, live stock options, corals, inverts, water quality, skimming

soo its just a tad diferent to reshwater ;)

I have just brought the UFO 880. Its a 305 litre tank.

Doresy....
Can you run by those mods for me again or send me a PM.

Laymens terms please, I am a bit of a newbie.
That's if you would be so kind.

Thankyou.

P.S....I looked into Marines for this Tank but thought it was far too complicated for me.Maybe in 5 years time.
My mate has been doing this for 35 years and has the best and biggest Lionfish you will ever see.Marines are stunning but a lot more hard work and the amount of water testing he does is incredible :hyper:

Ok, lovely tank you have for yourself there. When i got my 850, the first thing I notice was the quite loud gurgling sound from the water returning to the tank..This is caused by air being drawn down with the water similar to water going down a sink plug-hole. This is great for airating the water as no doubt it was designed to do but not so great if you have it upstairs as I do and are a light sleeper. I got over this by simply placing a piece of coarse filter sponge over the return hole in the hood chamber being held in place by being oversized so it has to be squashed. You could then easily remove it during the day if you wished. The filter media supplied with mine consisted of a very thin sponge (X2) and a small amount of noodles (ceramic tubes) also 2 carbon filled trays with a fine media covering. These will not be needed at the start up stage of a new tank. (put these expensive to replace items away for later use) This is how I run mine at the moment. In each of the 2 compartments (you may have 3) I have (starting at the bottom) A thicker layer (about 25mm) coarse sponge. Then a layer of noodles covering the sponge. Then a thick layer of fine white soft media. (this is purchased form the pond dept. at £2.99 a sheet) Being white it lets you know when it gets really mucky. To sevice the filter and having the 2 sets i just simply alternate cleaning so you don't loose bacteria totally. I take off the top, fine filter and squeeze out in old tank water to preserve bacteria. Then replace. Next time do the other one. You will find that the noodles and bottom sponge can be left untouched untill they show signs of discoloration and then just lightly shake in old tank water. I will replace the fine media when it shows signs of flattening. Remember my technique is something that I do and it works for me but I am by far just a novice myself! :hyper:

Hey everyone,
Nice thread. Just thought I would let you know I bought an AR980 yesterday (im totally insane... I rent, how am I ever meant to MOVE the damn thing)
But OMG it is SO SO noisy!!!!!! Its like having a gurgling waterfall run by a generator inside your living room!

I must be brain dead for not thinking about adding the filter sponge at the outlet to stop the gurling, so TY TY TY so much for this post, I just went out there and added it then and its so much better! But unfortunatly the POWERHEAD on this tank sounds like a generator. I dont think it is faulty but it hums so loudly. And of course the lids on the filter touch the spray bar which in turn touches the powerhead, causing the whole lid to vibrate. Does anyone have any ideas/thoughts on the powerhead?

Aside from the noise this seems like a beautiful tank! And I picked it up with a stand for only 600 aussie dollars, which seems pretty good to me.

sorry, just seen your addition. your spray bar should not touch the lids so you may have too much media in there. ok so this may be hard to explain but will do my best.....the power head is very heavy and the rubber mounting are off-set which makes the whole thing hang at a slight angle. The elbow is rubberised so it bends but it can still make the spray bar lift up. i got a piece of dense rubber block about an inch cube and bored a hole through it the diameter of the pipe that comes out of the power head. i hot glued it to the canopy (up side) over the power head then pushed the pipe up through it. this holds the assembly upright and quieter. hope this helps too :good: Another thing...sometime my power head gets a little noisy even with all I have done to it but the other night I gave the rubbery elbow a couple of quick squeezes and after it settled again it seemed much quieter perhaps and air build up?
